2009 WANGANUI SQUASH ENERGY DIRECT OPEN TOURNAMENT
The Wanganui Squash Clubs Energy Direct Open Tournament finished on Saturday with some great results across the board and saw an upset result in the Men’s Open. Palmerston North’s Joseph Watts (3rd seed) took out the title against his club mates as seven of the draw were from Palmerston North. The Women’s Open also saw a great result for the clubs top women Paula Darlington, as she made her comeback tournament a success and won all her games.
The Women’s Open which was a round robin saw Wanganui’s Paula Darlington the top seed win all her games. First up she beat Tawa’s Liz Wilson 9/2, 9/2, 9/4, then Palmerston North’s Alison Whtye 9/5 5/9 9/6 9/5. In the last pool game against Danielle Fourie, also from Palmerston North, which in effect was the final, it was a similar situation as the men’s match. Darlington won a tight first set, dropped the second after being outplayed and then got back on track to take it out in four sets, 10/8 1/9 9/5 9/2 for a great win.
The Men’s Open saw Watts step it up a notch and defeat Matt Nation (2nd seed) in the semi final 9/7 9/4 2/9 9/6. The other semi between the top seed Tim Preston & Tom Nash (4th seed) went the way of Preston in three sets 9/3 9/2 9/8. In the final Watts took the match to the higher graded Preston and continued on his winning way. After a very close first set which Watts claimed, he then dropped the second. However he took the game away from Preston in the next two sets to win 10/8 3/9 9/1 9/3 and continue his great early season form. The special plate was won by Tom Nash after he beat Nation 6/9 9/1 9/6 9/4. Blair Landers beat the only local in the draw Ant Rountree 3/9 9/6 9/0 9/5 to take out the plate, while the consolation plate went to Yeshan Ekanayake after he won against Ben Murphy 10/8 9/4 7/9 9/6.
Men’s Div 2 saw a battle between Wanganui club members John Rostenburg, (3rd seed) and Alan Dallas the top seed. Rostenburg took out a clincher, after being down two sets he came back to win in five 6/9, 6/9,10/8, 9/0, 9/5. Women’s Div 2 was won by the top seed Helen McGowan (Te Puke) from Chloe Mackay (Patea) 9/5 8/10 3/9 9/0 9/4.
It was wins all round in Div 3 of both Men’s & Women’s draws for Wanganui players. Adam Durning won all his games as top seed in the Men’s to be the winner ahead of Palmerston North’s Regan Smith. While in the Women’s 3rd seed Donna Harold ended up storming home beating the two seeds ahead of her in a close couple of four setters with Steph Durning runner up.
Men’s Div 4 was won by Nic Caton (3rd seed) from Wanganui beating Luke Dallinger (4th seed) from Feilding 9/0 9/4 9/1. The Women’s Div 4 saw Chonatae McLean-Woon (Rivercity) win ahead of Wanganui’s administrator Angela McCarthy.
In the Men’s Div 5 Feilding’s John Miller the 3rd seed finally ended the giant run of Wanganui’s young junior Neil Simpson (8th seed), by beating him 3/0.
Men’s Div 6 winner was Wanganui’s Dave Campbell with fellow club member Mitchell Bakker runner up and Hamish Crawshaw (Wanganui) was the winner in Div 7 after he won against Liam English (Rivercity) 9/4, 5/9, 9/1, 9/3.
