Welcome to the Wanganui Squash Club

STIHL SHOP WANGANUI CLUB OF THE YEAR

Yes!! We have done it again. If you are a club member then you are a member of the Best Sports Club in Wanganui, congratulations! The Sports Awards was a great night attended by a our President, Paul Kenny and a few of our members who enjoyed themselves tremendouly.  I hear they were a bit rowdy and fairly social but we do consider that a good thing when the Club wins an award like this. If you are not a member, then what more do we need to say - this is the best club in town!

Business House finished on a high for the year, with a great lot of new people coming down to enjoy the fun of this competition. We has our resident band the Seedy Bros  playing once again, and prizes were handed out for the winners of each division, as well as a few spot prizes. Everyone had a great night and there are already some teams gearing up for the next round in February.

WANGANUI SQUASH CLUB CHAMPS -This was a huge week for the club, the highlight of our year, finishing on Saturday night with the annual dinner. Huge entries this year with games every night Tuesday to Friday night, plus the World Cup on the TV, and full courts running 9 - 5.30 all day Saturday. There was some very exciting finals, and great support from the spectators which was great to see.

WANGANUI B & BELOW  sponsored by The Dentists and Doyle & Associates - August 12th -13th.

This was a great tournament to follow on from the Superchamps weekend 2 weeks earlier.

SUPERCHAMPS 2011 We had Mens's D, E & F Grade & Women's F Grade teams travelling away for the weekend and held the C Grade competition at our Club where we had a team in. The club hosted 11 teams for the weekend and it was full-on with tough squash competition for our boys andvery late nights up at the bar. Unfortunately all teams finished as Runner-up, but the F grade women have been invited to Taumaranui to compete in the National Tema Event, 14th - 18th September. We wish them luck.

MOLTEN  METALS CENTRAL DOUBLES - 8TH, 9TH July.

The Central Doubles, sponsored by Molten Metals Ltd. was held on 8th, 9th July. Although entries were low the calibre of the games was of a high standard and the spectators had plenty to watch. The winners of the Central Doubles Cup were Ant Rountree and Nick Caton, who beat the combinations of Al Dallas/Mal Peters, John Roestenburg/Paul Glentworth and then Rod Bannister/ Ken Mair in the final. In the 2nd Division Kyall Green and Nigel Ward took out the prize with the Rivercity combination of Matt Ratcliffe/Graham Pope coming in 2nd place. The 3rd Division was a 6 draw round robin, where there were some long battles between friendly rivals with Ian Van Delden and Vance Wilson coming out on top, followed by Darren Kelly and Al Nixon in 2nd place. Thanks to all those who entered and all those that helped out at the Club to make it a great event.

SUPERCHAMPS 2011

Our Club has 5 teams competing in the event on the 29th,30th, 31st July. Mens C, D, E, F and Women's F grades. We are hosting the C Grade Mens and Womens teams from around the district so the club will be humming over the weekend. Hopefully our guys/girls can come out on top. The F Grade are travelling to Marton, E grade to Inglewood and D grade to Okato - we wish them all lots of luck and hopefully we will be sending some teams away to the National Teams event in September.

Competitions are run thoughout the district for those that want to get into it, Interclub, tournaments and our major district competition, Superchamps. For any info on how to get involved in these events phone Pip at the office or check out the noticeboard at the Club.

Keep up your fitness for your winter sport, get back into the game if you haven't played for a while or just give squash a go. We can match you up with some of our friendly Club members who will give you a hit if you don't have anyone to play against. For more info contact Pip at the Club office.

WANGANUI OPEN @ EASTER 2011 IN ASSOCIATION WITH THUMP SPORTS

This was our big tournament for the year, and what a great tournament it was. The weather was beautiful, and there was some great squash. There were quite a few new players getting into competition squash for the first time, and they seemed to enjoy it. We had players from the Bay, Hamilton, Taranaki and even Marlborough, as well as from our neighbouring clubs.

Our great sponsors, Thump Sports provided the Wilson prizes. You can check out their range of rackets and other sports gear at the Pro Shop or online www.thumpsports.co.nz

The band ‘The Seedy Brothers’ were awesome and a lot of feet were sore the next day from all the dancing! It is great that we have such a good group of people at the club to make nights like this one possible! A big goodbye & we’ll miss you to Bryley Ryder who is jetting off to Sydney! Kareoke will not be the same without you!
